Maluma surprised everyone when he dropped a new EP on his birthday, 1/28. A few days ago, Maluma posted this cryptic photo on Instagram which led to rampant speculation that he had a kid on the way. This turned out to not be the case obviously. Instead we got a new album.
Instead we got #7DJ (7 Dias en Jamaica), a new EP that is HEAVILY influenced by reggae and Caribbean rhythms. I have to admit, this album makes me want to find the nearest beach and get there as soon as possible. This album blurs the line between reggaeton and reggae en Español while often dipping into the latter. It’s certainly a change, but a very welcome one.
A new sound for Maluma, this song delivers a great soundtrack for the summer. It hits all of the right notes. Chocolate is a certified summer party bop. Peligrosa is a great song to remind you to put all of the bad behind and enjoy the party (much like Maluma’s classic tune Carnaval). I could go on and on about all of the songs here but it would suffice to say that I’m a fan of almost all of them. I’m a big fan of both of the collabs on this album, the first with Ziggy Marley and second with Charly Black. The beauty of this album is that it works a singular work, which each song beautifully blending into the next. It also works as a collection of singular works. There is a thread that connects the entire album wonderfully.
On the other side, this album left me wanting more. Seven songs wasn’t enough to quench my palate. Maybe that’s more of an indictment of me than it is of Maluma. Regardless, the short length of the album is to it’s detriment. While we’re on the negatives, the only song that I was not a huge fan of was La Burbuja which, by my 2nd or 3rd listen, had started to grow on me.
In addition to the music itself, Maluma also released a music video for each song. So far, Agua de Jamaica is my favorite video. I’ll include that link below as well.
Final Thoughts
Overall, for a surprise release, this is a great outing for Maluma. It’s a new genre for him to dominate and his first entry lives up to what you would expect. This album will be played on repeat this summer on beaches across the globe.
Final score – 8.5/10
