This week’s Throwback Thursday is inspired by last week’s post. We’re focusing this week on Emmanuel, a Mexican singer who’s been active since the 1970s. He is also responsible for giving Manuel Mijares his start in music.

Emmanuel, born Jesus Emmanuel Acha Martinez, began his musical career in his native Mexico. Known as a perfectionist, his career began to take off during the late-70s. Emmanuel’s fame has been most strong in his home country of Mexico. His 1980 album, Intimamente, was his most successful, doing very well in Latin America. As it stands, he has released an album in five decades. He is also the father of Alexander Acha, who won the 2009 Latin Grammy for Best New Artist.

This week’s song Quisiera comes off this 1988 album of the same name. I hadn’t heard of this song until last year when I bought a record player. One of the first records I bought was Los 12 Grandes Del ’89 which, as you could guess, was 12 of the biggest songs of 1989. At the time, almost none of Emmanuel’s music was on Spotify and I couldn’t seem to find it on Youtube. I bought a CD drive for my computer just so I could install a program to manually record the song off the vinyl. Then about a month later the entire catalogue came online.

The song itself is relatively simple. Emmanuel wonders how he became so lucky to have someone like the girl he’s describing come into his life. He wants to know how she found her way to him. It’s a romantic pop song that’s super infectious. There’s something about this song that just gets in your head and doesn’t get out.

From 1988, Quisiera.
