Colombian artist Manuel Turizo is back with his sophomore album Dopamina. It’s hard to say much more than this project is a home run for the 20 year old artist. (His birthday is on April 12th so this is a great early gift I guess).
Dopamina has 13 tracks and there aren’t many misses. Looking through the tracklist, Te Fallo is the only track I didn’t totally love. That’s a pretty good batting percentage if you ask me.
Among the best songs on the album, it’s hard to talk about Manuel Turizo without talking about Mala Costumbre, his collab with Wisin & Yandel. It’s an absolute smash. Turizo performed the track on his appearance on HBO’s A Tiny Audience. The whole performance is worth a watch but as the host says, no artist has ever got the crowd moving like Turizo. That appears to be the theme on this album overall. Almost every song is so infectious that it makes you want to get up and start dancing.
There are so many styles evident on this album and Turizo dominates them all. La Nota (with Rauw Alejandro and Myke Towers) is a very good and very danceable reggaeton track, for example. Meanwhile, the closing track Antes Que Te Vayas is a guitar heavy pop track. The only area really left missing is a ballad. Otherwise, he has it all covered.
Even though there are a handful of collabs on this album, it’s hard to point to any artist overshadowing Turizo on a track other than maybe Wisin & Yandel. That’s not a small task when you have songs with Maluma, Farruko, will.i.am, Myke Towers, and Rauw Alejandro on the disc.
This album deserves to be played at every party this summer. Turizo’s appeal is almost universal.
The Verdict
With Dopamina, Turizo further establishes himself as one of the foremost artists in Colombian music. He demonstrates such a strong understanding and command of multiple styles of Latin music. If he wasn’t already on the path to international stardom, he’s certainly knocking on its door now.
Final score – 8.4/10
