It is Throwback Thursday once again. If you missed my post earlier this week about boleros, read that here. In honor of that post, and my recent bolero obsession, we’re talking about Los Panchos. We’re throwing it way back this week so strap in.
Los Panchos were formed in 1944 by Chuck Navarro, Alfredo Gil, Hernando Alives in New York City. The group contained two Mexicans (Navarro and Gil) and one Puerto Rican member Alvies. All three artists played guitar and sang. Over the course of their career, the trio has released dozens of albums. They have also sold millions upon millions of copies, becoming one of the best selling artists in Latin music history. To give some kind of context to their immense career, their first album was released in 1945 and their final album in 1991. The longevity of their career combined with their album sales and influence has made them, undoubtedly one of the greatest trios in music history.
As of 2021, there is an iteration of the ground still performing. They are operating under the direction of the son of Chuck Navarro, one of the founding members of the group. That marks 9 decades of music from Los Panchos, in some form or another.
A bolero standard, this week’s song is Sabor a Mi. I chose this track mainly because it was their most listened to on Spotify. This song, like many from it’s time, has been covered dozens of times. Luis Miguel’s Romances contained the track. A variety of other artists have covered the song throughout the years. Alvaro Carrillo, a Mexican writer and composer, wrote the song in 1959. Carrillo writes a couple that, although departed, can still taste one another. They feel one another’s presence and live with the memories of love past.
From 1959, Sabor a Mi.
