We’re back again with our Summer Essentials series. This week’s album is Mis Planes Son Amarte, the 2017 album by Juanes. This is one of my favorite albums of all time. It’s a fun trip through Colombia with nearly a dozen incredible songs.

Without further ado – let’s break it down.

Mis Planes Son Amarte – Juanes

Mis Planes Son Amarte is the 7th studio album from Colombian legend Juanes. Released in May 2017, this album is a groundbreaking effort. While the music takes front and center, this is also a visual album. Each track comes with it’s own music video that helps pull the project together in a cohesive manner.

Mis Planes Son Amarte received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics. The only two features on the album come from Fonseca and Kali Uchis. The visual album contains cameos from J Balvin, Piso 21, Sky Rompiendo, and others. Mis Planes Son Amarte also contains Juanes’s first English track in “Goodbye for Now”.

I once came across a vinyl version of this album in a Barnes & Noble but didn’t buy it. I didn’t own a record player at the time so I passed. Big mistake. Still kick myself for that one.

The Essential Tracks

As always its hard to choose just a couple essential tracks. Listen to the whole album, start to finish. It’s worth every second. Since we have to choose some tracks, here are our picks.

Angel” is one of the best tracks on this fantastic album. This is a song with a fun beat that crosses over to English speakers with ease. This was a go-to song while in college and it never missed. My friends who didn’t know a lick of Spanish still loved this song.

“Fuego” was the first single off of the album and it may be one of the best songs. It’s a great soft rock track that helps set the tone for the entire album. It’s a timeless classic and one of the best songs of Juanes’s career.

This song probably has the most edge of any on the album. The lyrics tell the story of an beautiful but ungrateful woman. The woman is a liar and deceitful and Juanes’s tells her that he’s had enough and cannot continue to deal with it. I may or may not have played this on repeat after a (minor) heartbreak.

This is one video that perfectly captures the mood of the song. This is the perfect kind of song to listen to while you’re just cruising down the street with the windows down. Its a great roadtrip song and a perfect song to enjoy with a nice summer breeze.

A Colombian Summer

If your plans don’t include Mis Planes Son Amarte then what are you doing? This album is a fantastic journey through Colombia and summer vibes. Nearly every track is a hit. Even 4 years later, this album feels as fresh and important as ever.
