This morning, the nominations for Premio Lo Nuestro 2021 were released.

J Balvin lead all artists with 14 nominations. Maluma came in 2nd with 12. Bad Bunny was tied for 6th most with 7 nominations. Let’s take a look at some of the biggest categories and predict some winners.

Artist of the Year – General

Nominees

  • Alejandro Fernandez
  • Bad Bunny
  • Camilo
  • Christian Nodal
  • J Balvin
  • Karol G
  • Maluma
  • Natti Natasha
  • Ozuna
  • Sebastian Yatra

Prediction – Bad Bunny. It’s hard to think of any artist who had a bigger year in all of music than Bad Bunny. A quick reminder, he released 3 albums (one of which was the first album entirely Spanish album to hit #1 on Billboard), became the most listened to artist in the world, and completely dominated social media. Hard to go any other way with this category.

Album of the Year – General

Nominations

  • Alter Ego – Prince Royce
  • Ayayay! – Christian Nodal
  • Colores – J Balvin
  • De Buenos Aires Para El Mundo – Los Angeles Azules
  • Guardame Esta Noche – El Fantasma
  • Hecho en Mexico – Alejandro Fernandez
  • Mas Caro, Que Ayer – Gerardo Ortiz
  • Mas Futuro Que Pasado – Juanes
  • Papi Juancho – Maluma
  • YHLQMDLG – Bad Bunny

Prediction – Bad Bunny. This a very competitive category. I could see Bad Bunny, J Balvin, or Maluma winning this category. Juanes’s album could be a dark horse candidate to win as well. I give Bad Bunny the slight edge solely given how massive YHLQMDLG was musically and culturally.

Song of the Year – General

Nominations

  • ADMV – Maluma
  • Bonita – Juanes & Sebastian Yatra
  • Carita De Inocente – Prince Royce
  • Fantasia – Ozuna
  • Favorito – Camilo
  • Keii – Anuel AA
  • La Mejor Version De Mi (Remix) – Natti Natasha & Romeo Santos
  • Morado – J Balvin
  • Solo Tu – Calibre 50
  • Tusa – Karol G & Nicki Minaj

Prediction – Camilo. These awards tend to favor pop artists more than urban ones. Favorito is a fantastic song and deserves recognition. Camilo is also nominated for Best New Artists of the Year which I also believe he will win.

Remix of the Year

Nominations

  • Caramelo (Remix) – Ozuna, Karol G & Myke Towers
  • DJ No Pare (Remix) – Justin Quiles, Natti Natasha, Farruko ft. Zion, Dalex & Lenny Tavarez
  • Hawai (Remix) – Maluma & The Weeknd
  • La Cama (Remix) – Lunay, Myke Towers, Ozuna, Chencho Corleone & Rauw Alejandro
  • La Jeepeta (Remix) – Nio Garcia, Anuel AA, Myke Towers, Brray & Juanka
  • La Mejor Version de Mi (Remix) – Natti Natasha & Romeo Santos
  • Porfa (Remix) – Feid, Justin Quiles, J Balvin ft Maluma, Nicky Jam & Sech
  • Relacion (Remix) – Sech, Daddy Yankee, J Balvin ft Rosalia & Farruko
  • Tattoo (Remix) – Rauw Alejandro & Camilo
  • Yo No Se (Remix) – Mati Gomez, Nicky Jam & Reik

Prediction – Hawai (Remix). Hawai was a major hit on its own but adding The Weeknd brought the song to new heights. This remix adds a new element to an already great song and helps bring a new dimension.

“Crossover Collaboration of the Year”

Nomination

  • Hawai (Remix) – Maluma & The Weeknd
  • Mamacita – Black Eyed Peas, Ozuna & J. Rey Soul
  • Me Gusta – Anitta, Cardi B & Myke Towers
  • Me Quedare Contigo – Pitbull & Ne-Yo Ft Lenier & El Micha
  • Que Maldicion – Banda MS de Sergio Lizarraga & Snoop Dogg
  • Ritmo (Bad Boys for Life) – Black Eyed Peas & J Balvin
  • Subelo (Furhter Up) – Static & Ben El, Pitbull & Chesca
  • TKN – Rosalia & Travis Scott
  • Tusa – Koral G & Nicki Minaj
  • Un Dia (One Day) – J Balvin, Dua Lipa, Bad Bunny ft Tainy

Prediction – Hawai (Remix). My heart wants to go with Un Dia but if I’m in the prediction business, then I’m going to ride with Maluma. Tusa also makes a very strong case and I can only see it pulling off the upset.
