El Playlist De Anoche by Tommy Torres – New Album Review

Tommy Torres hasn’t really been on my radar over there years. However, if your album gets produced by Bad Bunny, you’re suddenly going to have a lot more eyes and ears on your work. The Bad Bunny co-sign was enough to get me interested. So, with that out of the way, let’s get to work.

El Playlist de Anoche is the 4th studio album from Torres. It’s the first album that Bad Bunny has been the lead producer on outside of the urbano genre. Torres’s usually style is what I would consider to be singer/songwriter indie. While this maintains that sound at it’s core, there’s a more mainstream feel to the album.

What this album does very well right off the bat is marry a number of genres and styles in a pretty unique package. There are 9 tracks on the disc. All are connected by a pretty common mood, but each has a different flavor that will carrying you through the journey Torres is taking you on. There is a clear Bad Bunny influence here, but it doesn’t overpower. Instead, his notes are in the background and become building blocks for Torres.

Of the songs that I really enjoyed on the album were “Toda La Noche”, “No Lo Quiero Dañar”, and “Quisiera Ser El”. These songs are share the introspective alternative perspective that this album thrives on. I would say that at least 7/9 songs hit that point. There’s something undeniably fascinating the story this album tells.

While I wouldn’t say there are many songs that completely missed the goal, but of the ones I didn’t love were “Inmortal” and “Marea”. Neither is a bad track but they don’t full pull themselves together enough to be considered real hits and songs that are worth going back to.

Final Verdict

Tommy Torres delievers a very unique project with El Playlist de Anoche. It’s a project that samples a number of concepts and genres and almost immediately invites a second listen. This is the kind of album that I can listen to hen I need to kick back and think about life.
