Las Leyendas Nunca Mueran by Anuel – New Album Review

Las Leyendas Nunca Mueran, the highly anticipated new album from Anuel is here. After the release of his duo album with Ozuna, Los Dioses, earlier this year, this is the second new album from Anuel this year. Overall, this is his third album following his 2018 post-prison debut Real Hasta La Muerte and last year’s Emmanuel.

All About Anuel

Las Leyendas Nunca Mueran is a return to the old school for Anuel. Whereas Real Hasta La Muerte and Emmanuel included a eye toward commercial success and clean reggaeton sounds. On this album, Anuel is back to his trap roots. This album feels like a direct response to the critics who have claimed Anuel has gone soft since his release from prison. There’s a lot of the old Anuel here.

One of the clearest themes throughout the album is Anuel’s love of basketball and sports more generally. The album cover is as clear of proof of that as anything. Let’s also not forget that there are tracks named after Rick Flair and Connor McGregor. I’ve listened to it a few times already but I love the Mike Tyson sample in “Mi Voz Cuesta Un Million”.

My favorite tracks off the album are “Llorando en Un Ferrari”, “Mi Voz Cuesta Un Million”, “North Carolina”, and “Pin”. “Llorando en Un Ferrari” is a certified banger. I know I’ll have that on repeat for the rest of the year. It’s also going on all of my playlists. The singles off the album are also very good. “Leyenda” is one of my favorite tracks of the year.

Some of the tracks feel a little overindulgent. For example, the 10 minute opening “Real Hasta La Muerte” isn’t bad but it’s a lot. To put it mildly, it’s a bit exorbitant. I also wasn’t a gigantic fan of “Dictadura”, “Rick Flair” or “McGregor”.

When it comes to a general note on the album, while I like a lot of the songs, they don’t really hit the levels that would put this album in the “Great” category. There are great tracks but not enough to put the album over the top.

Final Thoughts

Anuel’s latest album, and maybe his last, is filled with his the hallmarks of who he is. It’s a return to roots for the Puerto Rican artist with songs about all of his idols and heroes. Trap overtakes reggaeton sounds to create a very good album. This will be the soundtrack for the next few months without a doubt.
