Coming off of the Latin American Music Awards, this week is loaded with new songs. We started early with the debut of Carlos Vives and Ricky Martin’s new track early in the week. Now we have a bunch of new songs to go over. We have new music from De La Ghetto (a record number of entries), Boza, Nicky Jam, Justin Quiles, Morat, Natanael Cano, and more!
We’ll have a review of Sech’s new album up this weekend. We’ll post the link here when it’s up.
Also this weekend is the debut of Season 2 of Luis Miguel: La Serie. It’ll be available on Sunday on Netflix. Read our great review of Season 1 here.
Without further ado, let’s get to the task at hand.
Cancion Bonita – Carlos Vives, Ricky Martin
This week’s new releases got a early start this week. Carlos Vives and Ricky Martin team up here for a great summer song. It’s a familiar tropical sound for both artists which is why it works so well. As Ricky Martin put it, this song is a love letter to San Juan, a city he loves. That love shines through and this song is a fun tropical bop that’ll be refreshing as the summer heats up.
Pareja de Año – Sebastian Yatra, Myke Towers
Let me get out ahead of this, I’m a big fan of both artists. However, this song just doesn’t do it for me. There’s no real hook to it. I walked away from this song with just a feeling of “Eh”. It’s pretty forgettable in all honesty. It’s disappointing how talented both of these guys are.
Aire – Steve Aoki, Farruko
I’m a big Steve Aoki fan. I also love Farruko. This song isn’t going to be included on either of their Greatest Hits albums but its still a fun song for the weekend. It didn’t strike me as anything special but I still had some fun with it.
Down to Miami – Emotional Oranges, Becky G
This song makes the cut solely because of Becky G. She adds a fun Carribean flavor to this track. it’s a good, relaxed song that has a enjoyable vibe to it. This might sound like an insult, but this song is a perfect candidate for a remix from an artist like DJ Snake or Tiestio or someone like that. As it stands, I like it but I have a feeling someone with an EDM background will get a hold of it and take it to the next level.
Ella – Boza
Fresh off of his global hit Hecha Pa’ Mi, Boza gives us arguably a better song than his biggest hit. This is one I’m going to come back to multiple times. I like it a lot. It’s a good reggaeton track and will take him even closer to breaking through to that mainstream of the urban genre.
Dime Si Tu – Anonimus, Nicky Jam, Guaynaa, Arcangel, De La Ghetto, KEVVO
This song is loaded, if you couldn’t tell by the deluge of artists in the title. It’s a great reggaeton track, no doubts about that. There’s a great blending of old school guys and new school guys. They balance each other well and push the track to a huge height. I liked this song enough that I added it to my playlist for non-Spanish speaking people.
Amor Tumbado – Natanael Cano, Alejandro Fernandez
So this is an unexpected combination. I guess I don’t know enough Cano, and that’s on me. Hand up, I need to do better. This song is a really cool blend of old Ranchera and modern trap, which is such a cool combination to pull off. In a lot of ways, you can feel the Mexican pride throughout this song. I’ll be listening to a lot more of Cano’s music in the near future.
Todos Perreando – El Coyote The Show, Justin Quiles, Nio Garcia, De La Ghetto
Another new track for De La Ghetto this week (that’s two so far if you’re keep score at home). This song is a good time. It makes you want to get on a dance floor and get down. There’s an old perreo vibe at the heart of this track that just makes it a lot of fun. I want to be at a house party with this coming over the speakers.
Presente y Futuro – Llane, Zion, Alvaro Diaz
This song is fine. It doesn’t really move the needle one way or another. Diaz does pretty well here but otherwise, not much to report.
Porfa No Te Vayas – Beret, Morat
Morat’s songs are all very similar and this track doesn’t stray far from the establish formula. That’s in no way a complaint. I like their music. Every new single from Morat is a great addition to my Latin soft rock playlist. Morat is ole-reliable. Put them on the mound and you’re getting 6 quality innings every time.
No Te Enamores (Alan Walker Remix) – Milly, Jay Wheeler, Farruko, Nio Garcia, Amenazzy
Now this is how you remix a song. This is what New Music Friday is about. Alan Walker tightens up this track and makes it even more infectious and addicting. His fingerprints are evident but they don’t distract from the track itself. Think of it as adding mayo to your grilled cheese. Or, like tossing a bottle of hairspray into a fire.
New Calle – De La Ghetto, Doeman
Put another one on the card for De La Ghetto. That’s 3 new tracks on the week. This song is probably the weakest of the three but I still get down with it. There’s a mixtape feel to it that’s fun. I’ll take the underproduced feeling of the song as intentional and with that assumption, I like it. The positive lyrics also serve as a good palate cleanser from some heavier tracks.
Dejo Atras- No Te Va Gustar
Another light rock song, what stood out to me in this song was how Uruguayan they sound. The hard “j” sound in their pronunciation is really something to behold. I hope Spanish teachers use this song as an example of how differently pronunciation can be in Spanish speaking countries.
