It’s New Music Friday once again. This week we have new songs from Anitta, Juanes, Lunay, Nio Garcia, Jay Wheeler, LATENIGHTJIGGY, and plenty more. Strap in and let’s get to work.

Dancing in the Dark – Juanes

The build up to Juanes’ next album continues with his second single which is a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s 1984 hit. Juanes’s version has a chill Caribbean vibes. I’ll put it this way, Springsteen’s version is the version to start the night with. Juanes’s version is the version you end the night with. This song put me at ease and really made me relax. I can’t wait to hear the full album.

Girl from Rio – Anitta

The highly anticipated single from Anitta is finally here. What’s interesting about this track is that it’s very narrative. It’s part autobiographical and part social commentary aimed at demystifying the romanticized perception of Rio, and it’s women. This song is an important one for Anitta. It’s not the kind you’ll hear at parties or clubs but it demonstrates a greater depth in his repertoire. It also demonstrates her ability to master songs in English.

Le Gusta Que La Vean – Lunay

Lyrically, this is classic Lunay. Lots of double meanings and some very adult lyrics. Composition-wise, a little different for him. There’s almost an old school vibe to it. I dig it. This is Lunay going right to what works for him.

Sin Panty – Nio Garcia, Farruko, Flow La Movie

This isn’t the greatest song from either artist. It’s dirty, sexual, and explicit. But that’s why it works so well. There’s an underground quality to this song that harkens back to the earliest days of reggaeton. It’s the kind of music that your parents will be disgusted by but you’ll grind to in the club. The lyrics are unapologetic and forward and it takes certain personalities to make that work as well as it does here.

Despiertate – Cali Y El Dandee, Mau Y Ricky, Guaynaa

I keep telling myself that one day I’ll like Guaynaa. That day has yet to arrive. Not to be too harsh but his verse really drags on this song. Beyond him, this is a good light reggaeton track that seamlessly combines the best of Cali Y El Dandee with Mau y Ricky. Like the only single friend in the group at prom, Guaynaa feels out of place here. The song is otherwise fine, but that’s about it.

Conexion – Foreign Teck, Justin Quiles, Jay Wheeler, Bryant Myers, Eladio Carrion, Tory Lanez

The long and short of this song is a lot of artists combined here for a decent trap song. No one really stands out on this song, which is really unfortunate since they’re all such talented artists. I will say it is nice to see Tory Lanez back in Latin music after his Spanish project just never came out after it was announced in 2018.

Y te pido perdon – Carlos Baute, Juan Magan

I don’t have a ton to say about this song other than it’s a good track to enjoy while you’re driving around and the windows are down. It’s a light pop track that fits in with Baute’s discography much more than it does with Magan. I like it, give it a shot.

Inocentes – Alex Gargolas, Lyanno, Brytiago, Alex Rose, Noriel, iZaak, John Hidalgo

Another song with a ton of artists. Difference here is this is probably my favorite new song of the week. It’s a very good reggaeton track with everyone bring a different spice to the final product. Everyone compliments each other stylistically which is evident most clearly in Noriel’s verse. Noriel has a very unique voice and flow and it doesn’t always fit perfectly in tracks. Well, it does here for sure. Great track, add it to the all the playlists.

Acuerdate de Mi – LATENIGHTJIGGY

New Music Friday is really a perfect venue for an artist like this. I had heard of LATENIGHTJIGGY before and just assumed he was a big artist. I think I confused him for PARTYNEXTDOOR. Regardless, without the New Music Friday Latin playlist, I wouldn’t have ever found this song. It’s a very solid, laid back track. It’s something I’ll come back to whenever I just need a night to chill.

Tu Fanatico (Remix) – Pedro Capo, Nicki Nicole, De La Ghetto

There’s something sexy about this song. I don’t know how to really describe it. There’s a slow, deliberate build that creates a tension. The slight rasp in Capo and Nicole’s voice only adds to the smoky flavor of this track. De La Ghetto adds a wildly different change of pace toward the end of the track with his rapping ability. He almost feels like a third wheel in this, serving to break up the tension between Capo and one of our best new artists of the year (so far).
