It’s Thursday once again and we are barreling toward the end of October. This week we’re going to slow it down and talk about “Amor de Cabaret” from Sonora Santanera. This is a nice, slow song to ease us into the weekend.
This week’s group is Sonora Santanera. The Mexican group formed in 1955 and has existed in countless forms ever since. The group was founded by Carlos Colorado in Tabasco, Mexico. Led by Colorado, the band grew throughout the 1960s, especially among the working class. The group revolved around it’s leader until 1986 when Colorado was killed in a tour bus accident.
Since it’s inception in 1955, the group has had a revolving cast of members. The first iteration of the group had 8 members. Sonia Lopez was the only female singer the band has ever had. She was only with the group for a short while before starting a solo career. The group still performs to this day, with a total of 12 members.
This week’s song is “Amor de Cabaret”. Released in 1965, this is a classic if there ever was one. It’s a very mild tempo song. It’s the kind of track that you listen to with the lights low, some candles, and a nice glass of red wine. That’s probably the intention. This song is about a “love of cabaret”. It’s a dangerous relationship as the singer wants to drown his pain in cabaret, even though he knows it’s killing him. It’s a reflective song on killing your sorrows with wine and emptying that bottle into the void in your soul.
From 1965, “Amor de Cabaret”.
