It’s Throwback Thursday once again, ladies and gentlemen. This week we’re talking about Roberto Yanes.

Roberto Yanes was born in Cordoba, Argentina in 1932. He began his musical career in his mid-20s during his military service. His first action in music was to join a group called Los 5 Latinos. When the group ceased to exist, Yanes went out on his own. His career as a solo artist took off. He became a romantic voice for a generation of Argentinians.

Yanes’s musical career generally peaked throughout the 1950s and 1960s. His discography is filled with original songs as well as covers of Spanish standards and classics. Over the course of his career, he released over 80 albums. Yanes died in 2019 at the age of 87.

This week’s song is “Que Sera de Mi”. The story spun by the lyrics revolves around the question of what one will become. Despite going their separate ways, the lyrics tell a story of how the two are bound to be together. Despite asking “what will be of me”, the story says the two come back together again. They find their ways back to one another. Life is a strange thing and has a way of bringing people back together who should be together. While there’s a large element of missing that in this song, it raises an important question. Yanes’s deep, crooner voice is a perfect form for delivering this deeply personal track.

From 1962, “Que Sera De Mi”.
