Apologies for the late post, I didn’t realize what day it was. It’s been one of those weeks. This week our Throwback Thursday song comes from Luis Miguel, an artist who is simultaneously one of the most popular Latin artists over the last few decades yet still relatively unknown to the mainstream US.

Who Is Luis Miguel?

Luis Miguel is known as the “Sol de Mexico” and is one of the most popular singers in the history of Mexican music. He is credited with revitalizing bolero as a genre and popularizing it during the 80s and 90s. He also has some of the biggest love songs in Latin music history. In terms of sales, Miguel is one of the highest selling artists of all-time. Miguel has had a very interesting life so I’m just going to list a bunch of things about him.

  • He is notoriously protective of his private life. From what I’ve seen, he basically travels with his own Secret Service in order to avoid the press. He rarely conducts interviews as well.
  • His mother went missing when he was 16 and it is not publicly known what happened to her.
  • He has been nicknamed the Latin Frank Sinatra.
  • Miguel has a long list of women he’s been associated with. And it is a very impressive list. He’s been linked to women like Mariah Carey, Salma Hayek, and Sofia Vergara.
  • He was the first Latin singer to get a start on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
  • He is the only major Latin artist of the 1990s to not crossover into the English market.
  • There is highly rated Netflix series about his life that I have yet to watch but after this, I think I’ll give it a shot. Expect a review of that at some point.

Ahora Te Puedes Marchar

Our song this week is one of his early songs, Ahora Te Puedes Marchar . If the song sounds familiar, it’s because it is a cover of the classic song I Only Want to Be with You which has been covered by a bunch of artists. The original version was performed by Dusty Springfield. This song came off of his 1987 album Soy Como Quiero Ser which was filled with Spanish covers of songs from the 60s and 70s. Miguel’s interpretation is a little goofy and bouncy, just as someone would expect from an 80s cover of a song from the 60s. The video itself has the silly charm that the best videos of it’s era strive for. It’s worth watching solely for the Michael Jackson wanna-be dancing and drama. I’m surprised this hasn’t become a TikTok challenge yet.

From 1987, Ahora Te Puedes Marchar.
