It’s Throwback Thursday once again. This week we’re talking about the Argentine rock star Sandro de America.
Born in 1945 as Roberto Sanchez-Ocampo in Buenos Aires, Argentina. As he began his musical career, he adopted the moniker Sandro de America. Sandro grew up idolizing Elvis Presley. Sandro initially wanted to be like Presley but instead developed his own unique style, pushing Argentine rock forward. (Argentine rock, by the way, was a major focus of a post we wrote last year. You can read that post here.) Sandro was one of the very first artists to record Latin rock, making him a pioneer in the industry. Sandro’s popularity reached similar heights to that of his idol Elvis in Latin America.
Over the course of his career, Sandro has released over 50 albums. He also starred in 11 films and several shows. Numerous tribute albums have been made in his honor as well. Sandro died in 2010 after a heart/lung transplant did not fully take. He was a heavy cigarette smoker which inevitably contributed to his death.
This week’s song is “Porque Yo Te Amo”. One of his biggest hits, this song comes off of his 1968 album Una Muchacha y Una Guitarra. The song is about being in love with your friend, but not being able to articulate the words. The singer describes the incredible way in which they view their friend. He wants to shout that he loves her but he’s paralyzed. This track is considered one of the most important singles of Sandro’s career and was a massive hit in it’s day.
