This week’s Throwback Thursday comes from Venezuelan Grammy Award winner Franco De Vita. De Vita has been making music since the mid-1980s and began to breakthrough in the late 1980s/early 1990s. Franco De Vita isn’t one of the most household names in Latin music anymore (I only knew of this song because I bought the vinyl of the album) but he does receive a shoutout from Justin Quiles in his song No Quiero Amarte.
Louis, our song this week, comes to us from his 1989 album Al Norte del Sur. This album was the first that launched De Vita into a new tier of stardom. The album had hits in Louis, Te Amo, and Aun Vivo. Te Amo is one of the great love ballads of all of Latin music.
Louis tells the story of a man who goes by the stage name of, you guessed it, Louis. He’s a huge fan of The Beatles and wants to be a singer like his idols. Louis fights the traffic and grind of day-to-day life, knowing that at the end of the line is his dream of being a singer.
When it comes to the song itself, it’s quintessentially 80s. The infectious chorus brings you in while the blaring saxophones bring it over the top. Tracks like this are what Throwback Thursdays are all about.
From 1989, off Al Norte del Sur, here’s Louis.
(If you stuck around to the end here and want to read some of our previous Throwback Thursday posts, you can read them here, here, and here).
P.S. Here’s a picture of my vinyl because I just want to brag
PPS – If anyone knows a good place to order old records like this from, please let me know.
