It’s Throwback Thursday once again and this week we’re going with Mexican artist Manuel Mijares. Mijares has been a major artist in Latin music since he was 23. He has gained major followings in both Latin America and Japan.
Mijares began his career in Japan, serving as a singer in Japanese clubs. Eventually, he became a back up singer for Emmanuel (who will be the top of next week’s Throwback Thursday). His career took off after going solo in the mid-1980s. Mijares became well known for both his music and as an actor, starring in Mexican films. He also performed the Spanish soundtrack for Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Over the course of his career, he has released a total of 41 albums, including some live and greatest hits projects. Mijares was married to singer/actress Lucero between 1997 and 2011.
This week’s song, Soldado del Amor is one of my favorite songs of it’s era. Put simply, it’s about fighting for love. The lyrics are a bit dramatic, I can’t lie. As he sings, every rejection hits with the impact of a bullet while each weird look is like being stabbed. Very dramatic indeed.
The composition of the song really adds to love/war theme of the track. It’s a fantastic track that unapologetically commits to it’s identity. You really can’t complain about any part of this track. If you couldn’t tell, I love it.
From 1988, Soldado del Amor.
