This week we’re coming at you with a classic song from Spaniard Camilo Sesto. The Valencian singer/actor passed away in September 2019, but left a legacy well beyond his home country.

Sesto is one of the most beloved artists in Spain’s history. His discography spanned decades and spawned over 50 Number 1 hits worldwide. His romantic style was iconic throughout the 1970s and 80s. Given the nickname “The King of Love”, Sesto released nearly two dozen albums since 1970. He was also known for his acting skills, including in Spanish productions of Broadway musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar.

My father once told me that Sesto came to his town in Spain for a concert. As my father puts it, “Yeah we almost killed the guy”. Evidently one of Sesto’s guitars short circuited and ended up electrocuting him during the show. If I remember correctly, they had to cancel the concert to make sure he was okay.

This week’s song is one of my favorites from Sesto, Vivir Asi Es Morir de Amor. In English, the title means “To live like this is to die of love”. The title pretty much sums up the song. It’s about falling too deeply in love, and not being able to stop yourself. While I love the lyrics, and can relate a bit too much to them, the composition is fantastic. I love the arrangement and accompaniment of horns and brass. It adds a spectacular flare to the song. There’s a fantastic rhythm to the song as well. It’s highly addicting and danceable. While this song is over 40 years long, it’s definitely still enjoyable.
