We’re a day late on Cinco de Mayo but we’re going to celebrate anyway. This week we’re talking about one of the most iconic figures in Mexican music, Vicente Fernandez. The name may not bring a bell immediately, but I guarantee you’ve seen this legend somewhere before.
Born in 1940 in Guadalajara, Vicente Fernandez is one of the most iconic artists in Mexican history. Where do we even begin? Fernandez officially retired from music in 2016 at the age of 76. His retirement came after a hell of a career. He is the father of Alejandro Fernandez, another legendary Mexican singer. He has sold millions upon millions of records. Over the course of his career, Vicente Fernandez has released over 50 albums. Fernandez has also had a formidable film career as well, starring in a number of projects. All of this and he has one of, if not the most iconic mustaches in music history.
This week’s song is Hermoso Cariño. The lyrics aren’t overly complex. They’re the words of a man who is so thrilled to have his woman with him. His beautiful love, as he calls her, was made just for him. He describes his happiness as a child with a new toy. The romantic lyrics have made this song a standard.
The key to this song, in my opinion, is the powerful and soulful delivery of Fernandez. He is able to deliver so much strength and power almost effortlessly. This song is a great example of Fernandez’s vocal power, especially as it gives more crednece to the Frank Sinatra comparison.
From 1992 and Vicente Fernandez, Hermoso Cariño.
For a bonus, here’s a video of some guy singing this song that I saw on Barstool Sports a while ago.
