It’s Throwback Thursday once again and this week we’re on the verge of a huge amount of new music. This is also the unofficial first weekend of fall. We’re kicking off the season with Joan Sebastian and his 1999 smash hit “Secreto de Amor”.
Joan Sebastian was born in a small rural town in Guerrero, Mexico in 1951. He began composing music at the age of 7. At the age of 14, he was sent to a monastery and heavily considered becoming a priest. Despite the impact of the monastery, he decided to dedicate himself to music.
Over the course of his musical career, Sebastian worked with a number of artists such as Vicente Fernandez, Roccio Ducal, and Pepe Aguilar among others. Sebastian was known for his Regional Mexican musical chops. He would compose and perform banda, marichi, and norteño songs. He was also known for performing live from horseback.
Sebastian suffered from bone cancer dating back to at least 1999. Despite fighting it off 3 times, Joan Sebastian passed away from bone cancer after it returned for a 4th time in 2015. Tragedy has not avoided this family as two of Sebastian’s 8 children have been killed in recent years. His second oldest son was shot and killed after an altercation at a nightclub and his third oldest son was killed at his father’s concert in 2006.
This week’s song is “Secreto de Amor”, my favorite song from Sebastian. The song shares a name with an album by Sebastian which has been ranked as one of the essential Latin albums of our time. The song begins slowly and builds to a fantastic pitch. It’s fun, danceable, and addicting. There’s also a heavy romance here which does so much to enrich the song.
From 1999, “Secreto De Amor”.
