Olivia Rodrigo’s new single Drivers License debuted #1 in the world on Spotify’s charts as well as Billboards. Debuting at such a high position would be impressive for any artist but considering this is Rodrigo’s debut single, it’s wildly impressive. The song itself is reflective and tells a vivid story of trying to heal from heartbreak.

We do have to address the elephant in the room though. The song, as impressive as it is, is WILDY depressing. It’s a Tuesday afternoon and I have to pump the brakes on starting Sad Hours.

So, inspired by Drivers License, today’s post will be about some of the essential Latin Sad Hours songs.

El Triste – Jose Jose

The essential Sad Hours song. It’s title literally translates to “The Sad One”. Considered one of the greatest songs in Mexico’s history, this song will have you sitting and contemplating every relationship you’ve ever had. The bravado and epic nature of Jose Jose’s performance fully encapsulates you and sets the tone for each of the songs that follows it on this list.

Hoy Tengo Ganas De Ti – Miguel Gallardo

This song gets me every time. I could be having a perfectly pleasant day, this song comes on shuffle and BAM, big time Sad Hours. The title of the song translates, roughly, to “Today I desire you”. This song, in the most delicate and subtle of ways, provokes the feelings of sadness and loneliness that one endures as their relationship falls apart. There are a number of lines in this song that cut me to my core, but perhaps none more than the lines “I want to end, on your lips, the thirst of my soul, and discover love together each morning”. Beautiful, but brutal.

La Incondicional – Luis Miguel

One of the greatest hits of Luis Miguel’s storied careers. This song once made a friend of mine cry and he doesn’t even speak Spanish. A song about unconditional love that has been lost because the singer didn’t know how to love them. The power of Luis Miguel’s voice pushes this song to new heights and hits something universal in all of us.

Experienca Religosa – Enrique Iglesias

Off one of Enrique’s earliest albums, this song tells us about a love that was almost a religious experience. When they were together, they “discovered infinity”. The presence of a choir in this video really helps to drive home the religious theme of the song. The sex scene in the video, which seems to take place on the floor of a bar, really drives home what the song is *really* about. Enrique has a number of great ballads but this is one of my very favorites.

Amorfoda – Bad Bunny

Released on Valentine’s Day 2018, this song is all about being done with love. The chorus of the song is very simply, “I don’t want anyone to talk tome about love. I’m tired. I know all the tricks.” A simple piano beat makes this song infectious and so easily put on replay, although for your own emotional well-being I wouldn’t recommend it. This song was among my most listened to on Spotify in 2018, which should tell you how good of a year that was for me.

Deje de Amar – Marc Anthony and Felipe Muniz

A duet between Marc Anthony and his father, this song tells the story of a man who forgot to love. This song forces you to sit and reflect on the lost loves of your life. In many ways, its a song about priorities and ensuring that you don’t lose track of what really matters. If you ever really relate to this song, maybe it’s time to look in the mirror.

La Cancion – Bad Bunny and J Balvin

The best song off of Oasis, which is one of my favorite albums of all time, this song taps into the sentimental side of both Balvin and Bad Bunny. This song is about hearing a song that was at one time special to you and someone else and being transported back in time. The irony of this song is that for many people, myself included, this song will be the very thing it describes. It’ll remind you of one person or moment and maybe you don’t want to relive that moment but the memory will always be there.

El Farsante (Remix) – Ozuna ft Romeo Santos

The original version of this song was heartbreaking enough, but Ozuna just had to go out and add Romeo Santos to put this over the top. This song is all about trying to win back a lover. The lyrics read as a final plea from someone who was a bit of a player but has seen they only want one person. They want to fix this mistakes and they want their lover back. This might hit a bit too close to home if you’re going through a breakup but it also might be just what you need.

My Baby You – Marc Anthony

As a background, this song is so wrought with emotion that Marc Anthony won’t even perform it live anyone. Coming off of his 1999 self-titled album, this song is another one that always seems to hit just the right note. While the song may have been written about his daughter, it’s more frequently been associated with lovers. Regardless, its a song filled with pure love and emotion. As you can see in the video below, it is so physically demanding on Anthony to sing that he breaks down in tears as he sings it.

Ignore the Greek subtitles, this was the only version I could find.

Solo Yo/Nobody But Me – Sofia Reyes and Prince Royce

The only song on this list that’s available in two languages. Thankfully, for those who don’t speak Spanish, each version of the song is nearly identical. I think I speak for most people when I say this song is very relatable. Who hasn’t been in a slightly toxic relationship where you just can’t seem to get it right? It’s a relationship where you don’t want them to be with anyone else, but at the same time you don’t want to be together. I mean, come on, who hasn’t been in at least one, or a few, of those relationships? (Please tell me I’m not the only one).

Hopefully your Tuesday isn’t ruined now. I have plenty of other sad songs like this for future posts but these should tide you over until then.

Until next time.
