Two years after his debut album Epico. Lunay is back with his sophomore album, El Niño.

Lunay has been one of the most exciting young artists in the game for a little while now. He exploded on the scene with Soltera and it’s remix with Daddy Yankee and Bad Bunny back in 2018. His debut album was one of the better albums of 2019. He has also put out a ton of killer singles and features. All before turning 21. Massive talent in such a young artist.

The only single from this album was Le Gusta Que La Vean which I talked about when it was released. The rest of the album is completely new. This album, according to Lunay is all about who he is now. Who he is now, is an artist who knows how to make some monster urban tracks.

Among the best songs on the album are Vudu (with the impeccable Chenco Corrleone), Dale Banda, and TBC. Todo O Nada with Anitta is a very good song as well. I would go as far as to say it’s Anitta’s best song of the week. Best Life is really where that earlier quote from Lunay comes into the play. He’s living his best life now but I can’t wait to hopefully see a retrospective on this song 10 years or so from now. The cool thing about this album is that for Lunay, it’s a musical and career time capusle.

The album isn’t without it’s share of misses. The biggest miss that stands out to me is Party DB. This songs can’t decide what it wants to be. Does it want to be old school reggaeton like Don Omar or does it want to be something different? It’s hard to tell, which is a major problem. La Mini also misses the mark for me. Some songs like Otra No are just one or two corrected errors away from bringing this album up into the next tier. The problem with Otra No is that Zion repeats the titular line just one or two too many times.

Final Verdict

Lunay’s sophomore album is a very good record. The hits far outweigh some of the weaker tracks. I don’t know that this is an album that I’ll bump like Epico but this is a big album for both Lunay and the industry. Remember, he’s only 20 years old. Here’s to hoping we get plenty of more albums like this.

7.7/10
