On May 2nd, Farruko celebrated his 30th birthday. He also announced that he is retiring from music after the release of his next/final album. Farruko was one of the first artists who brought me into reggaeton so his retirement really marks the end of an era for me.

Farruko began his career by releasing his music on MySpace in the late 2000s/early 2010s. He continued to grow his musical base throughout the 2010s, appearing with artists like Daddy Yankee, J Balvin, Bad Bunny, and literally hundreds of others. Never one to shy away from controversy, Farruko was arrested in 2018 for allegedly trying to bring $52k in undeclared cash into Puerto Rico.

Over the course of his career he’s released 8 albums (so far) and dozens upon dozens of singles. Let’s take a trip through the Puerto Rican singer’s career and talk about some of the most important releases that he’s had over the years. With such a prolific career, we’re bound to miss a few hits but we’ll do our best to hit the biggest ones.

Passion Whine ft. Sean Paul (2014)

This was the first Farruko song I ever heard. I was immediately hooked by the deep Caribbean vibe and Farruko’s distinct style. Listening to this now is a look back into my high school life and just getting into Latin music. This will always have a special place in my music history.

Lejos De Aqui ft. Yandel (2014)

Another early hit for Farruko. I remember this song lighting up the radio for months while I was in high school. I don’t know if you can find this remix on Spotify, but it’s the best version of the song, in my humble opinion.

6AM ft. J Balvin

This is the song that made me a J Balvin fan. I remember being in my high school Spanish class and telling my friend to his report on this song. Our teacher, who was a very cool guy, wasn’t necessarily thrilled about the choice. Regardless, the song has stayed in my rotation for the last 7 years or so. The video for it is both fun and funny. When J Balvin inevitably retires one day, this will be in his post as well.

Obessionado (2015)

This song was a SMASH back in the day. How big of a hit was it? It’s been five years and I somehow still know all of the lyrics. That’s a hit right there. Just listened to it again and can confirm, this song still slaps.

Chillax ft. Ky-Mani Marley (2015)

This is one of those songs that makes you feel like you’re on a beach in the Caribbean. It still slaps 6 years later.

Never Let You Go ft. Pitbull (2015)

One of the few tracks in which Farruko sings in English. There’s a ballad element to the track as well which is fantastic. One of the better tracks off of his Visionary album.

Blockia ft Bad Bunny (2017)

Farruko’s trap prowess begins to show here. This song is a great breakup track for anyone who needs to block their crazy ex.

Trapxficante (2017)

The opening song off the album of the same name. The song lays out, in explicit terms, why Farruko is turning over to trap. It’s a great opening to one of the most underrated Latin Trap albums of the last few years.

Mi Forma de Ser (2017)

A little more sentimental from Farruko. This shows a very different side of the artists, who at that time, was very hardcore and brutal.

Krippy Kush (2017)

I didn’t love it at first but this song got stuck in my head and hasn’t left in 4 years. The remixes of this song with Nicki Minaj, 21 Savage (although he got cut), and Travis Scott are also great.

Despacio ft Yandel (2017)

A song I very randomly heard at one of the biggest bars at my colleges. They weren’t having a Latin night or anything like that. Just randomly played this song. Great track. I’m a big fan.

Inolvidable (2018)

I included the original version here but the remix is just as good, if not better. One of the songs that marked Farruko’s return to reggaeton.

Coolant (2018)

Caribbean vibes run deep throughout this song. It’s all about shaking what you have. The music video is fun and goofy. A song that gets into your head and doesn’t let go.

Ponle ft J Balvin (2018)

The video for this song is basically a precursor to Tiktok. The little DJ dance move they do is a classic. I also believe this song later became a Tiktok song. Funny how that all works out.

Calma (Remix) – Pedro Capo (2018)

If Puerto Rico ever needs a new anthem, they may end up choosing this track. This song so perfectly encapsulates everything about the Caribbean vibe and was an absolute smash hit when it first came out. Fantastic song.

Fantasias ft. Rauw Alejandro (2019)

One of the biggest songs of his in recent years. This also helped to launch Rauw Alejandro’s career. Still slaps.

Canam ft. Miky Woods (2019)

Sampling old salsa songs is always the way to my heart. This song does just that. Therefore, I had to include it. Great song.

La Cartera ft. Bad Bunny (2019)

Other people like this song a lot more than I do. I still like it but there are some (Rolling Stone I think) who listed this as one of the best songs of the year.

Delicuente ft. Anuel AA, Kendro Kaponi (2019)

A biographical song about his arrest. This is Essential Farruko. It’s a fantastic insight into who he is while sampling Tego Calderon’s Bandoleros.

Nadie (2019)

A very progressive song. If I’m not mistaken, this song is about Farruko encouraging a girl to pursue a relationship with another girl, telling her not to worry about anyone.

La Toxica (2020)

Coronavirus robbed us of a lot of experiences. Getting to scream, ” Y se va pa’ la calle en busca de un jangueo” in a packed club while this song plays is one of them. I can’t wait to hear this song in person with plenty of people letting it all out.

Burros de Salitre ft. Nengo Flow (2021)

One of the most recent additions to this very long list. This song is tough. It has cutting lyrics and slick yet cutting trap style. The explicit first lyrics always make your ears perk up but they perfectly convey the mood of the song.

Sin Panty ft. Nio Garcia (2021)

The most recent and probably final addition to this list until the final album comes out. We talked about this song on our New Music Friday post which you can read here. It’s an old school, dirty song that will get you moving.

Enjoy retirement, Farruko. You’ve given us a hell of a lot of music to enjoy over the years.
