The Queen of Reggaeton is here with her latest album KG0516. Karol G’s 3rd studio album is one of the best new releases of the year. The album is packed with attitude, style, and, most importantly, fantastic music that crosses all stylistic boundaries. As her team puts it, this album is a journey that transcends musical dimensions.

Karol isn’t afraid to give us something different on each track. 200 Copas is a perfect example of this. The track feels like a live performance with the composition that sounds like a traditional Mexican recording. On Odisea with Ozuna (ironically also the name of Ozuna’s first album), we’re gifted with a mid-tempo reggaeton track. On Location, we have a urban/country mix that’s sure to light up everyone’s speakers this summer. There are so many great tracks on this album, including the singles Tusa and Ay DiOs Mio.

Among my favorite tracks on the album is Leyendas. This song is a reggaeton history lesson. Karol guides us through a early reggaeton history with stops along the way with Ivy Queen, Wisin & Yandel, Nicky Jam, Zion, and Alberto Stylee. Stylee was an interesting choice to include here but he brought a different, more reggae inspired influence to his section. I hope there’s a music video for this track, there’s a lot of artistic directions this can go in.

When it comes to the downsides of the album, there’s only a pair of tracks that I didn’t enjoy as much as the rest. Beautiful Boys and Arranca Por Carajo missed the mark for me. They aren’t bad by any means but I didn’t come away from this album remembering these songs.

Verdict

KG0516 is one of the best new albums of the year. Karol G shows us a wide range of musical ability and further establishes herself as the Queen of Reggaeton. This album is going to clean up at award shows and on the charts this summer.

Final score – 8.4/10
