It’s New Music Friday again and this week we have A LOT to go over. As noted by a journalist on Twitter (whose tweet I cannot find now), today is the deadline for music to be included in the 2021 Latin Grammys so everyone will be releasing new music.
This week we have a new album from Manuel Turizo (read our review here). We also have new singles from J Balvin (with Khalid), Juanes, Jay Wheeler, Myke Towers, Sofia Reyes, Reykon, and more!
We have a lot to go over so let’s get to work.
Otra Noche Sin Ti – J Balvin, Khalid
At this point we all know that I love J Balvin. It’s hard for him to do wrong by me at this point. Guess what? He still hasn’t. I’m a big fan of this song. It has some Sad Boy lyrics but it’s midtempo rhythm is perfect for a night sitting on your porch with a Modelo. Or, it’s a perfect song for a warm summer night when you’re driving and your headlights are the only light. Khalid follows Balvin’s lead but does more than enough to hold his own. Khalid’s verse is more than solid but don’t get it wrong this is a Balvin song that Khalid just happens to feature on. If this track along with Tu Veneno are any indication, Balvin’s next album is going to be one of his most unique yet.
El Amor Despues Del Amor – Juanes
The first single off of Juanes’s next album. Juanes has stated that this album will be a tribute to the pioneers of Latin Rock. Listening to the first single, you can definitely see the 70s influence. The music video (with Juanes having bangs) really fits the vibe. The song has a great blues rock twist that reminds me of The Who with a dash of ZZ Top. As a huge classic rock fan and a huge Juanes fan, I love it.
Viendo el Techo – Jay Wheeler
This week’s New Music Friday cover art on Spotify. Pretty decent outing from Jay Wheeler. This isn’t one of his greatest hits in my opinion but it’s still a fun song. I’m glad we have some new music from Wheeler but we’re still waiting on his English track.
Burberry – Myke Towers, Nengo Flow
What I love about Myke Towers is his ability to seamlessly master rap, trap, and reggaeton without any effort. Adding Nengo Flow, an artist who’s unique voice has changed the course of a number of songs, is a great move here. This is a slightly edgier Myke Towers. I don’t know that this will win him many new fans but those who have been rocking with him for a while will love it.
Dancing on Dangerous – Imanbek, Sean Paul, Sofia Reyes
I can’t lie, 75% of the reason I like this song is because Sofia Reyes is the love of my life. I’m kidding (but not really). After Roses, Imanbek has a high standard to meet with each track. I can’t say my expectations were necessarily met. I don’t dislike this song but it’s not the kind of party jam I was expecting. Give it a shot but manage expectations going in.
Dios Asi Lo Quiso – Ricardo Montaner, Juan Luis Guerra 4.40
What happens when you combine a legendary tropical artist with a bolero/balada artist. Well, you get this track obviously. This is a good song to play during a summer barbecue with a mixed audience. It won’t offend anyone and it’s good enough that everyone will enjoy it enough.
Jarabito- Lary Over, Farruko, Lirico En La Casa, El Alfa
El Alfa’s fingerprints are all over this song. Unfortunately, he dips the track a bit too heavily into dembow for my liking. The repetition of “jarabito” so rapidly and so often really takes a lot of way from the song. If you’re into this style, I guess it’s a lot more enjoyable. I liked the verses from Farruko and Lary Over but the dembow elements were just too much for me.
TAPPD’N – A. Chal
I’m going to keep beating this drum. A. Chal is the most underrated and underappreciated crossover artist of a generation. This guy just knows how to make great bilingual tracks. He has an innate ability to seamlessly transition between English and Spanish, trap and R&B, and sentimental and party. It’s not too late to hop on the bandwagon with me. Trust me.
LA SUITE – Reykon
This song is pretty simple in concept. Reykon wants to have sex everywhere. That’s what it comes down to. Simple as that idea may be, the song is great. It’s super catchy and is bound to get stuck in your head. Reykon has always been a good artist and this is one of the best songs he’s released in a long time. Unexpected great songs like this is what New Music Friday is all about.
