This week’s Throwback Thursday comes from Juan Luis Guerra 4.40. For those of you new to Juan Luis Guerra, he is a Dominican bachata artist and one of the most internationally successfully artists in Latin music history. He’s sold over 30 million albums and won 21 Latin Grammys. He’s also a GIANT at 6′ 8″.

For reference, Juanes and Karen Martinez are 5’8 while David Bisbal is 5’9. He is just a gigantic human.

Anyway, back to the music. This week’s song is La Bilirrubina arguably one of the biggest songs off his iconic 1990 album Bachata Rosa. La Bilirrubina tells the story of a man who’s so broken up over a woman that he’s in the hopsital waiting for her to inject him with her love. If you have an interest in the medical field, this song is perfect since it’s full of full of medical terminology. Its title translates to the Bilirubin, which according to my quick Google search, is a yellow pigment that is made when red blood cells breakdown. I’m no doctor but being able to somehow incorporate something like bilirubin into a bachata/merengue song is very impressive.

From 1990, La Bilirrubina.

Bonus – my favorite song off of Bachata Rosa
