This week’s Throwback Thursday comes to us via Mexico. Si No Te Hubieras Ido is one of the most popular tracks by Marco Antonio Solis. Solis has been in music since childhood. He formed his first group Los Hermanitos Solis (The Solis Brothers) at the age of just 6. In the mid-70s, he co-founded the group Los Bukis. The group was highly successful but split in 1996 so that Solis could pursue his solo career. Needless to say, he has experienced A LOT of success as a solo artist, becoming one of the most iconic Mexican artists of the last few decades. If Solis’s voice sounds familar, it might be because he’s the Spanish voice of the villain in the 2017 Disney movie Coco.
This song, which in English means “If you hadn’t left”, is all about the one that got away. It’s about looking in the mirror and not knowing who you’re looking at. There’s a pain in losing the one who you thought would always be around and whom you thought would the one. It’s something we’ve all experienced before. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, I figured we would go with a love song like this. (If you’re looking for some happier Valentine’s Day songs, take a look at our list here).
The song itself was written by Solis but originally performed by Mexican singer Marisela. Once Solis went solo, he re-recorded the track and really made his own. While there are covers by several artists like Mana, Charlie Cruz, David Bisbal, and others, the Solis version is the definitive one.
