Happy Throwback Thursday. Here in the Midwest we’re getting pummeled with snow so we’re going to pretend we’re in nice sunny Mexico. This week we’re talking about one of the most legendary Mexican performers of all time, Pedro Infante.

Pedro Infante was born in 1917 in Mazatlan, Mexico. He was one of 15 children. He began singing and acting young. Over the course of his career, Infante recorded over 350 songs and starred in over 60 films. To call Infante anything other than an icon in Mexico would be an understatement. He was widely regarded for his acting skills as well as his musical talents. He won the Silver Bear Award for his performance in the movie Tizoc at the Berlin Film Festival. Musically speaking, he was known for his mariachi, rancheras, boleros, and more.

Infante died in April 1957 in a plane crash. Infante was an avid pilot. On the day he died, he was flying from Merida, Yucatan to Mexico City to contest a legal matter regarding his marriage. Minutes after takeoff an engine failed, causing the plane to spiral and crash. The crash killed Infante as well as 4 others.

This week’s song is “Cien Años”. One of Infante’s signature songs, this was a major part of his repertoire. The lyrics tell the story of a man who runs into his ex-lover on the street. She walks by him without acknowledging him. He calls her but still, nothing. He vows to love her for 100 years, even if she won’t love him. It’s a heart breaking song that hits on a very primal love and pain that one feels from heartbreak. This song has been recorded by tons of artists over the years.

From 1950, “Cien Años”.
