Happy Throwback Thursday once again. This week we’re continuing our trilogy of legendary Mexican artists. This week we’re talking about Jorge Negrete. Let’s talk about The Singing Cowboy.

Jorge Negrete was born in 1911 in Guanajuato, Mexico. In his youth, he was very unruly and had a penchant for misbehaving. This became enough of a problem that his father, a former Mexican Army Coronel, enrolled him in a military academy. The military academy is where his interest in music began. He began his musical career in 1931 singing for a radio station in Mexico. A few years later he began his acting career. His acting career brought him to major heights. Over the course of his acting career, he starred in over 40 films in 16 years. Negrete was also the founder of the Mexican Actors Associations. His musical career included stints with Los Tres Calaveras, singing rancheras. Negrete was known for his mild baritone voice, and his penchant for rancheras.

Negrete was the first of “the Three Mexican Roosters” to die. He died at the age of 42 of complications of hepic cirrhosis.

This week’s song is “Yo Soy Mexicano”. This song comes to us courtesy of the 1942 film “El Peñòn de las Animas”. The song is a love letter to Mexico. It’s a prideful tune that Negrete belts out with a true love of Mexico clearly deeply imbedded in him. This is a great example of the rancheras that made Negrete so famous throughout Mexico and Latin America.

From 1942, “Yo Soy Mexicano”.
