Happy Thursday. This week we have a big post. Today marks the 27th anniversary of the murder of Selena Quintanilla. In honor of that anniversary, she’s our Throwback Thursday artist of the week.
Born in 1971, Selena Quintanilla has one of the most well known stories in the history of Latin music. She began her musical career at the age of 6. When she was 10, Selena and her family formed the group Selena y los Dinos. The family band continued together throughout her high school years. As the group hit the mid-1980s, record executives were much more interested in Selena than the rest of the band. While Selena would perform with the band, they would move further to the background.
The height of Selena’s career came in the early 1990s when she increasingly became a crossover star. She began as a Tejano singer but quickly started to sing in English as well. She was also known as the Latin Madonna for her style.
Selena was murdered by the former President of her fan club in 1995.
Selena’s full life is pretty well documented by the 1997 movie Selena starring none other than Jennifer Lopez. The movie does a much better job than I could showing the full life of Selena and her family.
This week’s song, of the many we could choose, is “Si Una Vez”. Off of her 1994 album, Amor Prohibido, “Si Una Vez” is easily one of the biggest hits of her career. It’s a great break up song for anyone who looks back on their relationship and says to themselves, “what was I thinking?”. It’s about regretting loving someone, or at least telling them that. There’s a real rawness to it that makes it truly impactful.
From 1994, “Si Una Vez”.
