Happy Throwback Thursday. Happy Holy Week as well. We’re digging deep in the bag for this week’s artist. This week we’re talking about the Spanish singer Chiquetete.

This week’s artist was born in Andalusia, Spain in 1948 as Antonio José Cortés Pantoja. He began his musical career at the age of 8 and at the age of 12, formed a group named Los Algecireños with Manuel Molina Jiménez and Manolo Domínguez el Rubio. It was around this time he adopted the name of his uncle, giving him the artistic name of Chiquetete.

Chiquetete would go on to a solo career in the late 70s. The height of his career came in the 1980s when he released a multitude of albums. Over the course of his career, he released over 20 albums with his last coming in the early 2000s. Chiquetete died at the age of a heart failure after a hip operation in 2018.

This week’s song is Esta Cobardía. The title of the track translates to “This Cowardice”. The song is about the cowardice of being deeply in love with someone, who doesn’t know the depth of your love. There’s also a large theme of being afraid of your love. He talks about idealizing her, seeing her as a star. He puts her on such a pedestal that he hopes he can never achieve being with her. What I love about this song is the fact that it touches on the idealization of love, the acknowledgement of it, and the fear of it’s reality. It’s an important thing to think about whenever love’s invovled.

From 1984, Esta Cobardía.
