A little late on this but it is Throwback Thursday once again. This week we’re talking about Spanish singer Miguel Gallardo and his 1976 hit Hoy Tengo Ganas de Ti. It’s a rainy day across the Midwest, so we’re going to choose a nice calming (and emotional) bolero.

Gallardo was born in Granada, Spain in 1950. Gallardo started his career writing songs for other artists. He began his own musical career, originally under the name Eddy Gallardo, in 1972. He changed his name to Miguel Gallardo and released his debut album in 1976. Over the course of his career, he released a number of albums, making him a legendary figure in Spanish music. Gallardo died in 2005 after a bought with renal cancer.

Hoy Tengo Ganas de Ti is one of those songs that just hits me every time it comes on. We originally talked about this song in a post about Sad Hours, a very appropriate tag for this song. It’s a song about a man wanting the woman who left him. Every day his love grew more and more, but then he left looking for more. The lyrics are poetic and beautifully written. Lines like, “I want to quench the thirst of my soul on your lips” and “I want to find my way in your open hands”. It’s hard to find more poetic and romantic lyrics than those. Gallardo’s voice is filled with emotion and a delivery that helps to pull it to a higher level. The combination of the passion and romance makes this a romantic standard in Latin music.

Hoy Tengo Ganas de Ti was covered by Christina Aguilera and Alejandro Fernandez in 2013 to much acclaim (included below).
