It’s Throwback Thursday once again and this week we’re in a cumbia vibe. Thank Becky G for that (read last week’s New Music Friday post for that context). Unlike the salsa posts over the summer, I don’t actually know how to dance cumbia. I actually don’t know all that much about the genre. So we’re going to learn together. This week we’re talking about Los Angeles de Charly, a Mexican cumbia group from the late 90s/early 2000s.

Los Angeles de Charly are a Mexican cumbia group formed in 1999 when lead singer Charly Becies and vocalists Guillermo “Memo” Palafox and Jonathan Martínez left Los Angeles Azules. Los Angeles de Charly became a major player in the cumbia market. Their 2000 album Un Sueño was a hit for the group, spawning today’s song choice. Overall, the group has released 9 studio albums together but none since 2011.

This week’s song is “Un Sueño”. I first heard this song as part of a cumbia mashup done by KYEN?ES? a few weeks ago. Since I’ve been on this cumbia kick, this is one of my favorite songs that I’ve encountered. The title of this song translates to “a dream”. The lyrics tell of living a dream, with a girl of your dreams. Get in the right setting and play this song and it’ll get the people moving. Enough drinks in and everyone will be singing “Un sueño, un sueño yo viví, Ay, niña, estás juntito a mí”.

From 2000, “Un Sueño”.

If this makes you want to dance cumbia, then watch the video below.
