This weekend is Valentine’s Day. For people like myself, February 14th is just February 14th. For others, this is a day to let your romantic passions flare. Latin music is known for it’s passion and it’s love songs so Latin music is really a perfect fit for days like this. With that in mind, if you’re looking to spice up your Valentine’s Day playlist, look no further than here. From the classics to contemporary hits, we have you covered here.
In no particular order, here are ten of the most essential Valentine’s Day tracks.
Es Por Ti – Juanes
Lets be real, there were a lot of songs that I could have chosen for Juanes. I chose this one as a good intro to both the list and Juanes. It’s a good soft rock song that will put you at ease and get you in the mood for Valentine’s Day.
Also I believe this is the first time I’ve written about Juanes on the blog. Quick story, Juanes was slated to perform near me last spring. I was obviously pumped so I bought good tickets and was wrangling up people to go. His concert was in April and was going to be my leadoff for the other concerts I was supposed to go to last year. Unfortunately, that was 2020 and COVID had different plans for my year. Of the 3 shows I was supposed to see, this was the only one that was not rescheduled. Hopefully he’ll be back around soon.
Contigo Aprendi – Armando Manzanero
Manzanero unfortunately passed away recently of COVID-19 but this classic love song will live on forever. This song is a classic example of a song that only really make sense when you’re in love. While Manzanero was a prolific performer, with a 45 year plus recording career of his own, he was also a prolific writer. His songs have been performed by artists like Frank Sinatra, Luis Miguel, Jose Jose, and Elvis Presley.
Tu Amor Me Hace Bien – Marc Anthony
Just like Juanes, I could have chosen a dozen different songs for Marc Anthony. He’s my favorite artist of all-time and has a deep catalog of songs perfect for this list. I talked about one of them on a previous blog. I figured I’d choose a more upbeat love song for this blog.
This is all about a love that’s good for you. Hopefully this is the kind of love you’ll be celebrating this Valentine’s Day.
Te Amo – Franco de Vita
I mentioned this song on a Throwback Thursday blog about another Franco de Vita song. Reading through the comments on this song, it’s pretty clear this is a perfect choice for the list. This song came out in 1989 and as the Youtube comments read, this song a lot of people have been married to this song. This song is what people think of when they think “Latin love songs”.
Mi Persona Favorita – Alejandro Sanz, Camila Cabello
Probably the newest song on this list. This song, if you couldn’t guess, is all about finding your favorite person. Its a lovely duet between the gravely voice Alejandro Sanz and Camilia Cabello. I will give fair warning, if you’re jaded or heartbroken over a lover, this is probably the music video to avoid.
Como Han Pasado Los Años – Julio Iglesias
Julio Iglesias is a frequent artist on this blog, and for good reason. He’s arguably the biggest artist in Latin music history. This song is for an old love. It’s a song that embodies how even in an older age, love can keep us young. Likewise, it’s about how even after so many years, the right love and relationship can feel as new as the day it began.
Abrazame Muy Fuerte – Juan Gabriel
This song is pure poetry from start to finish. It so beautifully puts words to some of the most indescribable emotions and desires of someone in love. Even if you don’t speak Spanish, this is a song to sit down with and read through the lyrics of. Pro-tip, if you want a good gift for a significant other, the lyrics of this song put next to a picture of the two of you together could really do wonders.
El Amor De Mi Vida – Ricky Martin
From Ricky Martin’s first album (and you can tell by the video). This song is simply about the love of your life. This song has all of the dramatics of 90s ballads. It also has Ricky Martin with super long hair which makes watching the video worth it enough. The song has been re-recorded a few times by Martin himself and also very recently by CNCO on their latest album.
La Incondicional – Luis Miguel
This song is about unconditional love. It’s an ode to the loves that know no bounds, even though we may not realize it in the moment. This song is undoubtedly one of the best to come out of Luis Miguel’s career and is certainly one of the best of not only its era, but of all time.
Creo En Ti – Reik
Another recent addition to this list. This song comes from the Mexican group Reik. This is all about a love that’s transformative and changes the course of one’s life. It’s a deeply personal song that will flatter anyone who this song is dedicated to.
