Happy Throwback Thursday. This week’s Throwback Thursday post is inspired by David Bisbal’s latest single. His single was “Se Nos Rompio El Amor”, his mother’s favorite song, and a cover of one of Rocio Jurado’s biggest hits. So, with that, let’s talk about Rocio Jurado.
Born in Cadiz in September 1946 as María del Rocío Mohedano Jurado, she would shorten her name to Rocio Jurado as her musical and acting career would grow. She began singing at the age of 8 and by the time she was 15, she was performing in local festivals. Her career began with her performing flamencos and coplas. Jurado’s Andalusian roots were at the core of her early career. Her career took off in the 1970s and 80s as her romantic songs and ballads exploded.
Over the course of her career, she earned a number of nicknames including “Las mas grande” (the great one). She has released over 35 albums and many more singles. She has also appeared in 10 films. Rocio Jurado died in June 2006 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
This week’s song is, unsurprisingly, “Se Nos Rompio El Amor”. If you couldn’t guess from the title, this isn’t a happy song. This is a song about a love so strong and beautiful that it dies out. It’s about intensity and passion but the fire burning bright, but not for long. Most impactful are the lines, “Two springs, I fed on you, for a long time. We ate each other alive, like beasts, we never thought about winter. But winter comes.”
From 1985, “Se Nos Rompio El Amor”
