Throwback Thursday 4/7 – Diego Verdaguer

It’s Throwback Thursday once again and this week we have another Argentinian artist. This week we’re talking about Diego Verdaguer.

Born in April 1951 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Diego Verdaguer was a major star in Argentinian music. His musical career began when he was just a teenager. His career began to grow and expand throughout the 1970s and 80s. He married fellow Argentinian singer Amanda Miguel and helped her to launch her career to a higher level. Verdaguer died at the age of 70 in January of this year due to COVID complications.

Verdaguer’s musical style evolved over the years. He began singing romantic ballads, then pivoted to cumbias, and eventually ending with rancheras. Over the course of his career, Diego released 13 studio albums, 5 live albums, and one book.

This week’s song is “La Ladrona”, off of his 1981 album Estoy Vivo. The lyrics are about the singer telling a girl to be careful with his heart. She stole his heart now she has to care for it and keep it safe because it’s delicate. In terms of composition, this song uses a lot more bell than I was expecting. Not a cowbell, but a literal church bell. This is one of the more unique songs we’ve featured here.

The only way I can really describe this music video is just pure 80s goofiness. I want to see someone recreate this today. Everything about it, from the mustache to the hat, is iconic. What a video.
